Ikkyo for Starters
By Jon Reading
Many aikido techniques carry a significant principle as well as a physical application. The key to developing your technique is understanding the purpose of the movement. Ikkyo is a basic principle of aikido, and a primary technique in training. There is a calligraphy by O'Sensei of a circle with a dot it the center. The calligraphy represents the principle of ikkyo. Ikkyo is the principle of becoming the technique and instantly seizing victory by taking initiative. The first principle of aikido is to be victorious by becoming the center of the technique and forestalling the intent of your partner.

Move like a beam of light:
Fly like lightning,
Strike like thunder,
Whirl in circles around,
A stable center.
-O'Sensei-

As you grow in aikido, ikkyo will take on different meanings. This is one of the more simple interpretations of ikkyo principle.
