Training Information

Emory Aikikai invites students of all styles and skill to train with us. Please use the guidelines below to help prepare for class; Please observe the Rules and Regulations of the dojo when you train. If you are interested in becoming member of the dojo please visit our section on Membership for more information.

Attire

Practice wear is a traditional judo or aikido gi. Lighter gi (such as karate or taekwondo gi) may be used, but are not recommended due to the stress and wear from practice. If a traditional gi is unavailable, comfortable exercise clothes may be worn (please wear long pants and a short sleeve T-shirt - no shorts or tank tops).

Jewelry

All jewelry should be removed before class. Jewelry can break or be damaged during class or, worse, cause injury to yourself or your partner. Exceptions may be made for jewelry and medical devices that must remain on the body.

Personal Hygiene

Your body should be prepared for training. Long hair should be pulled into a bun or ponytail to keep hair out of your eyes - please do not use hard fasteners such as claws, clips, bobby pins or barrettes. Finger and toenails should be trimmed to avoid scratching or nail breaking. Because of the close, personal contact in aikido, please come to class clean and groomed.

Injuries and Special Care

Cuts, scratches, rashes, burns and other open wounds must be covered at all times. These wounds must be covered with a bandage that prevents the transfer of bodily fluids to another participant. If the wound cannot be covered, you should not train. Participants should indicate chronic injuries or injured appendages (such as an arm or ankle) with a piece of contrasting tape on their uniform. Tell the instructor before class begins about the injury, and tell your partner each time you begin to train about the injury. If your partner is ever injured on the mat, it is your responsibility to help care for him/her. Assist your partner to the edge of the mat and attend to their needs (getting water, bandages, etc.). If the injury is serious, notify the instructor immediately and begin any emergency procedures necessary (notifying the building supervisor, etc.).
